He's Here!

Ian Don Mikesell was born Friday, April 19, 2013 at 4:39 am. He weighed 8 lbs 1 ounce and was 19 inches long.

Still at the hospital

(sorry, I don't know why this picture won't turn)

In the car seat ready to come home

Celeste has been such a good big sister. She always wants to hold him and will sit there with him for a long time. She loves him!

Caleb is also a great big brother and always wants to hold him. Unfortunately he came down with a cough and runny nose the day we brought Ian home so I haven't let him hold him as much.

Here are my three children. I love this picture!

The rest of this post is for myself. My journal. You can read it if you want to hear the labor/delivery story but I mainly want to document it somewhere before I forget.

Ian was due April 22nd. This pregnancy was harder on my body. I definitely felt older! I wanted to go into labor on my own since I had been induced with the other two. We were just waiting around, getting things done, and wondering when it was going to happen. I was dilated to a 1 on Wednesday, April 17th. Thursday night (April 18th) I went to bed as usual at about 10 pm. I was having contractions but didn't time them and just tried to go to bed thinking they'd stop. I finally started looking at the clock at about 11 and they were about 15 minute apart. At 11:15 I had another that woke me up and I felt like I was losing my mucus plug so I went to the bathroom. Ryan hadn't gone to bed yet and said I was tossing and turning a lot. When I got up he asked if everything was okay. I said oh yeah, I'm just going potty! I went back to bed. At 11:30 I had another contraction and felt like I was losing more of my plug so I got up again. This time as I was walking to the bathroom I started leaking and my water broke. I calmly said to Ryan, "I think my water just broke." I've never seen Ryan get up from watching TV so fast in my life! He started running around asking me what he needed to do, where to take the kids, etc. etc. I said just hold on. I'm not even contracting! And besides, we can't go to the hospital before midnight anyways so we aren't charged an extra night! I called the hospital and asked them if I needed to come right in or to wait since I wasn't contracting hardly at all. They said come in. Ryan packed backs for the kiddos while I packed my bag. We loaded the kiddos up and took them to our excellent friend and neighbors house where they slept on the couch. We got to the hospital at 12:15 am. I was having contractions about every 10 min by then but nothing too major. By the time they got me in and checked in it was probably close to 1 am and I was dilated to a 2. They called the doctor and he said start me on pitocin. They started that at 1:30. They did more paper work and all that fun stuff and I requested an epidural at 2:00 or 2:30. (I know things can get rough with pitocin!) I got the epidural at about 3:00 am and then they checked me again and I was at a 5. I warned the nurse that with my other two children I went very quickly from a 6 to a 10. She thanked me for telling her that but I don't think she really believed me. By this time it was close to 3:30. They brought a cot in for Ryan and he got to sleep from 3:30 to 4:00. From 3:45-4:00 I started feeling a lot more pressure and the urge to push but it wasn't terrible. The nurse came in to change some IV fluids and I told her and she asked if I needed checked. I said I'm not sure. She checked me (4:00 am now) and I was fully dilated. Her shift gets over at 6:00 and she commented, "I didn't think I'd be helping with the delivery of this one!" They called the doctor and he asked them to ask me how long I normally have to push. I said twice. :) So he came right away. (He had already delivered a baby at 11 or 12 that morning so I don't think he really wanted to come in again!) The doctor got there at about 4:25. The nurse had me do a practice push. I gave a half effort push and she said good enough....no more! The doctor suited up, I pushed through 2 contractions and Ian was born at 4:39 am. Everything went well and he looked great. He was spitting up in the hospital quite a bit but that's common when they come down so quickly. The nurse commented that he might have some acid reflux but I'm hoping it was just him clearing his lungs. We got to come home from the hospital Saturday morning at about 10:30. Sleep hasn't been great and we are all tired but doing well.
